Department of Microbiology, Govt Kilpauk medical College deals with :

Infrastructure

Microbiology department in the college has the following facilities. Lecture hall that can accommodate 150 students, Demonstration room, Practical lab, service laboratory, museum, departmental library, Research laboratory and Seminar room for postgraduates and a PG lab.

Microbiology Department in the Hospital has 7 service Laborarties.

Academic Activities

The Dept. of Microbiology has medical and paramedical courses. Under the Medical Course, MBBS & MD (Microbiology) courses are conducted with the strength of 100 and 2 per year respectively.

II MBBS Students

Lectures, practical classes, seminars and tutorials with periodical assessment.

They are practically trained for staining procedures, identifying cultures and reporting serological tests.

As an extension of teaching, vertical and horizontal integrated teaching are done with other concerned department.

Post- Graduate is MD microbiology are trained is all aspects like diagnosis, interpretation and management of patient samples and correlating it clinically.

Their academic activities include lecture demonstrations, practical classes, journal clubs, seminars and participating in CME – Conference presenting paper and posters.

They are encouraged to choose research topics for their dissertation which is a vital part of their curriculum.

Paramedical : DMLT paramedical course is also conducted as a two-year course with training of students as to collection and processing of samples in all discipline of microbiology along with theory and practical chance and examination are held every year.

Theatre swabs sterility checks, food samples and water surveillance
2Virology:Screening for Hep.B, HCV,HAV,HEV infections and viral load monitoring by PCR for HBV and HCV
Screening for Dengue IgM,Dengue NS1
Covid 19 diagnosis by PCR

8Infection control activities:Antimicrobialstewardship,framing antibiotic policy,regular training programmes as awareness to staff nurses,CRMIs
9Biomedical waste management:Regular BMW rounds done in all wards and proper segregation of waste ensured.Regular training programmes conducted for CRMIs,staff nurses and multipurpose workers
10Molecular lab:To diagnose covid 19 by PCR and viral load monitoring for HBV and HCV
