DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE

Government of India under National Health Mission started Trauma care centres aiming to reduce the road traffic accident related deaths. The ultimate aim is to have one 24 hours comprehensive emergency Orthopaedic and Trauma care centre for every 50 to 60 kilometres stretch in the National and major State highways.

The main objective of the Trauma care center is to provide comprehensive emergency care to the accident casualties, to treat major injuries like Head injury, Cardio thoracic injury and stabilising such patients before transportation to appropriate centres.

Government of Tamilnadu has decided to implement the Trauma care network in June 2017 in the name of ” Tamilnadu Accident and Emergency care Initiative ( TAEI )” and the Mission Director, National Health Mission is designated as ex-officio Commissioner of Trauma care. Stroke , Myocardial Infarction , Trauma , Burns , Poison and PREM are the 6 Pillars of TAEI.

TAEI was started in Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital as Level II centre on October 23rd , 2019 with capacity of 30 beds by Professor Dr. P. Vasanthamani , Dean of GKMCH. It has the facilities for Triaging , Zones like Green, Yellow and Red with point of care laboratory, an X- ray unit of 500 MA , Ultrasonogram and Echocardiography.

As per the amendment by National Medical Council ( NMC ) in October 2020 , in facilitating the MBBS students admission, Government of Tamilnadu upgraded the existing TAEI program into Department of Emergency Medicine in 25 Government Medical Colleges.

Government Kilpauk Medical College & Hospital , formally commissioned The Department of Emergency Medicine on 23rd June 2021 by Professor Dr. R. Shantimalar M.D, D. A, DME ( OSD), Dean of GKMCH.

Started with 1 Professor , 1 Associate Professor , 1 Registrar with 7 Emergency Medical Officers, TAEI trained Staff nurses 24 nos. for triaging as Green Zone , Yellow zone and Red Zone.

The facilities are 30 ICU beds supported by Oxygen ports with Central suction, 30 high end Ventilators, 30 ICU monitors, 1 Point of Care Laboratory, 1 Mobile X-ray unit with 500 MA, 2 ECG machines , 2 Defibrillators, 2 Ultrasonograms with all probes, 2 ABG machines, 1 Troponin machine, one Emergency surgeries Operation Theatre and One Trauma Operation Theatre .

This department is supported by Faculties and Postgraduates from General Medicine, General Surgery , Orthopaedics and Anaesthesiology , delivering emergency services by 24/7 all the days . Cardiology, Neurology , Radiology and all other allied services are rendered at the bedside level . Imaging is supported by Fax system and Lysis being done at the bedside by both Cardiologist and Neurologist.

It caters almost 150 patients on an average everyday , who are presenting to the emergency department , are treated , stabilised and shifted to the respective departments within 6 to 8 hours.

TAEI Skill Grading Training

Tamilnadu Government is rolling out various health system projects in the state in association with World Bank and Japan International Agency (JICA). One among them is Tamilnadu Accident and Emergency Initiative (TAEI) which has started training faculties and staff nurses in all health care facilities called “Skill Grading Training” aiming to train all the trainees to get expertise in treating all the emergency patients who require Basic Life Support (BLS).

Catering all the emergency patients including trauma, Department of Emergency Medicine in Government Kilpauk Medical College is committed in training the faculties and staff nurses of various centers and the Institution itself from November to January 2021 in 8 batches.
