Introduction

Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospitals one of the premier hospitals located in the middle of a densely populated Chennai , especially catering to the poor /lower socio economic status people. The hospital is unique in providing tertiary health services not only for the state of  Tamil Nadu , but also to the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh.

The Dental surgery department of Government Kilpauk Medical College has an outpatientstrengthof30000perannum.DentalsurgeryDepartmenthasawellequipped Dental chair units, Dental Xrays, ultra sonic scalers, light cure units

Oral Medicine , Diagnosis and Radiology

Diagnosisofexistingproblem,formulationofatreatmentplanandX-raysfordiagnosis when needed

Pedodontics (Children)

Treatmentofdentalcaries(toothdecay),guminfections(gingivitis),fractureteeth/jaws( trauma to teeth/jaws), malaligned teeth, undergrowth/overgrowth of jaws, mouth ulcers etc. Special appliances can be given to correct jaw deformities if they are recognised early. Fractured teeth or jaws can be diagnosed with the help of x-rays and appropriate treatment given. Tooth colored filling and restorative materials are available and these appear very esthetic.

Orthodontics (correction of malaligned teeth)

Teeth that arenot inproperalignment,thathavenot eruptedproperly,jaws thathavenot grownproperly(toosmallortoolargeforthatparticularage) canbediagnosedearlyand special appliance are given. Adults seeking jaw corrections are treated with appliances and surgery. Space maintainers and removable appliances are given routinely.

Cleft lip/palate

Babies are given( feeding plate/obturator). Pre-surgical orthopedics is undertaken. Constantfollowupiscarriedout.Post-surgicalmanagementbyoralappliancesarealso done.

Periodontics(gumproblems)

Superficial (gingival) and deep gum (periodontal) problems- infection, inflammation, ulcers, bone loss etc. are treated by medicines, proper cleaning (scaling) and surgery. Tooth brushing and other oral hygiene methods are taught to the patients during scaling and oral hygiene is regularly monitored especially for patients who are prone to deleterioushabitslike-smoking,paanchewing,tobaccochewingandbetelleafchewing.

Oralsurgery(surgicaltechniques)

Jawfractures,biopsy,Extractions,Impactions,cystsenucleationandmiorsurgeriesare done with utmost care

Endodontics (root canal)

Fillings,rootcanalproceduresandapexificationarecarriedoutappropriately.Discolored teeth due to trauma, fluorosis or hypo-calcification can be restored properly.

Prosthetics(replacementofmissing teeth)

Replacementofoneormoreteeth(partialdentures),allteeth(complete/fulldentures)are done.

Oral cancer: cancer detection examinations and biopsies foe cancer are done
