Anatomy

Introduction

The Department of Anatomy, came into existence as one of the pillars of Govt. Kilpauk Medical College. The department has a reputed history that it was built in the horse stable of Panagal Maharaja. At present the department is located in the ground floor of faculty block still maintaining the antique treasures inherited from the old block.

The department excels and stands unique in maintaining good academic performances. The departmental activities includes Lecture classes, practical classes with dissection and demonstration to medical and various para medical under graduates (yoga and naturopathy, Bachelor of Occupational Therapy, and other Allied Health Science courses).

150 students are admitted each year to the MBBS course. The undergraduate course taught by our distinguished faculty and residents, provide students with a solid foundation in the medical sciences, foundation course on stress and time management, communication skills, attitude and ethics is conducted in 1st month of admission every year. Emphasis is also placed on empathy with the aim of developing compassionate doctors who give best care to their patients. Undergraduate students are also benefitted by doing research work connected with ICMR.

Three Post graduate students in M.D(Anatomy) are admitted every year. Post Graduate teaching modules consists of seminars, group discussion, pedagogy sessions, assessments and demonstration.

The department is also an active organiser for various CME, Competitions (Model making for Undergraduate art, mime) and cadaveric workshops for post graduate training and skills acquirement in surgical and allied discipline.

The department is also known for its special counselling for Voluntary Body Donation Programme.

.

Infrastructure

The department is well equipped with a Dissection hall and Histology lab to train the undergraduates and post graduate students. It also has research lab with required equipments. It houses a museum with separate sections for comparative anatomy, sectional anatomy and embryology lab. Different laboratories of the department conduct both basic and applied researches.

Spectrum of Activities:

Both conventional and modern methodology of teaching and learning anatomy is being applied by the department. Modern Methodology include 3D Embryology models, Clinical charts, Visualiser, Sectional Anatomy, Comparative Anatomy. The Faculty members and Residents are actively involved in academic activities such as journal club presentations, Pedagogy for continued learning.

  • Interactive small group discussions for AETCOM.
  • Smart board upgrades the level of teaching technically
  • 3D embryology models that are being utilised for academic training and teaching purposes.
  • Clinical charts for objectively structured practical examination.
  • Visualiser enables teaching faculties to magnify even microstructures to teach large scale students.
  • Sectional Anatomy enables cardiology and Forensic residents to enhance their knowledge on anatomy.
  • The department of anatomy is running an active Voluntary Body Donation program. Total 29 persons have pledged their bodies after death to the department of anatomy in the year 2023
  • Cadaveric Workshop have been conducted in association with Department of orthopaedics and Neurosurgeon to enhance their hands on skill as well as health care services.
